GeForce 7800 GT question
Anyone know if a rig with an Athlon-64 (single core) and a GeForce 7800 GT is going to be capable of running GW2? I know it will probably not work with physics... Maybe on low settings though?
A friend has this rig and plays nothing but GW and wants to know if he needs a new computer to play GW2...

nobody really knows. i bet he'll be able to play GW2, but definitely not on high.
and really, nobody knows the requirements for GW2, so all we can do is speculate.

I know GW2 is supposed to have physics, which the 7000-series doesn't run...

Id say he could manage it on low settings, but as moriz said, nobody knows yet.
At the very worst he might need to buy a new graphics card, wont need to buy a whole new comp, maybe some RAM if he has less than 4G. But RAM is so cheap it hardly matters, could buy an nvidia 9800GT for about 50 quid, that would definately run GW2.

It's an AGP graphics card, so this is as good as it gets.

one think we need to clear up: there's a difference between hardware accelerated physics, which GW2 will use, and PhysX, which GW2 WON'T use.
PhysX is an entirely proprietary physics API designed by Ageia, which was then bought out by Nvidia. it runs on the CPU (very poorly, Nvidia purposely castrated this version) and on their 8 series or above graphic cards. it works only on Nvidia hardware. GW2 will NOT be using it, since it is entirely unfair that only a certain group of your playerbase can use the effects.
GW2 will be using the Havok physics engine, which can run on practically anything. it is not as powerful as PhysX, but it is an open standard that's being supported by everybody. it runs on any processor made in the past 10 years, and looks to be GPU accelerated by both ATI and Nvidia graphic cards in the next year or so.

I'm gonna throw out a wild guess that GW2's minimum requirements will probably be like... 2.0+ GHz P4/1.5+ GB RAM/Lower End Radeon HD Card. The game looks great for the in-game part of the trailer but I don't see it being a very heavy requiring game. Maybe maxed out it'll be worth it to buy a high end card for the people who want ultra smooth frames and an awesome looking game at the same time.. but as long as there is a medium settings to make it look like GW1 i'll be happy with that.
Also, this'd probably fit better over at Guru2.

I agree, GW1 requires very low specs for the graphics it puts out, and chances are, GW2 will be the same.

There are some middle of the road ATI cards available for AGP, but they are not cheap. I believe that there are plans for a 58xx series on the AGP port. I saw a 4850 AGP, a friend has one.

don't know about the processor, what's the model number? the 7800gt is starting to get a bit outdated now, i'm not one to upgrade components, i prefer to save up and buy a whole new computer... seems to me cheaper that way overall so if your mate want's to turn the settings up in GW2 (s)he might need to start saving.

btw, i guess your mate is still running XP with that hardware? if so there's no real point in upgrading beyond 3 gig of ram, XP won't recognise it.

He should be able to run GW2, but being able to run and having decent graphics are very different things. I would highly recommend a new computer purchase before the end of 2010.

I have a 7900gs in my laptop and that runs GW at 60+ fps with AA turned off - less in Kamadan and EoTN of course. I would suspect that the 7800gt would have similar performance in GW1 - however GW2 will likely not run nearly so well. Both the CPU and the GPU are going to hold the FPS down, how much I can't say (no one else can either at this time). You could save the money and get a whole new rig before GW2 is out. I'd say you could save some of the compatible components from the old computer (Fans, Optical Drive, etc... maybe the case itself) and for a few hundred $$$ have a nice "new" PC that can handle GW2 easily.

Well, the card is decent, but it's really hard to tell. I mean, I know it would have trouble running Aion. GW2 will be in what, two years? Maybe three.
It's almost impossible to tell right now.

supposedly Anet personal have gone on the record saying that there most likely will be some type of Beta content by end of 2010...... for what that's worth - we might have GW2 first quarter of 2011..... :s

Wasn't there supposed to be a beta before the end of 2009?

ATI 4650 AGP is available nice and cheap - got one in GF's PC and a 4670
pci-e in mine. (just recently made the switch from an agp machine myself)
